Abstract:

Hospital pharmacists across Europe face a rapidly changing environment: workforce shortages, budget constraints, and new policies on digitalisation, sustainability policies and patient safety. In this context , pharmacists are increasingly called to assume a leadership role—not only in delivering high-quality care, but also in setting a clear strategic vision for the future of medication management.

This Synergy Satellite session will focus on the leadership journey required to move from vision to reality, with a particular emphasis on digital transformation and the implementation of Closed Loop Medication Management (CLMM). Through real-world examples, including large-scale European hospital projects, the speakers will illustrate how pharmacists can position themselves as key drivers of change, uniting clinical excellence with managerial and technological innovation.

The focus will centre around three key questions: How can the lead pharmacist articulate  a clear and compelling vision for the future of pharmacy and patient care? How can they advocate internally to mobilise support and resources for this vision? Which skills and capabilities are critical to turn ambition into sustainable results?

Participants will be engaged in interactive discussion to reflect on their own leadership roles and to identify practical steps towards advancing their institutional strategies.

Ultimately, the session aims to empower hospital pharmacists to take ownership of the digital agenda, demonstrating how effective  pharmacy leadership directly translates into improved patient outcomes and greater institutional value.

Learning objectives

After the session, the participant should be able to:

  1. Define the core elements of visionary leadership in hospital pharmacy, with a focus on digital transformation and CLMM.
  2. Identify effective strategies for internal advocacy and stakeholder engagement to realise your pharmacy roadmap.
  3. Recognise the skills, capabilities, and external resources needed to successfully lead change in medication management.

Educational need addressed

Hospital pharmacists frequently have limited access to formal leadership training, particularly in the areas of digital transformation and medication safety. This session addresses that gap by providing practical insights, frameworks, and resources designed to strengthen their leadership capacity and, ultimately, enhance patient care outcomes.
