Travel Medcine – an update on best practice and elements involved in setting up a travel clinic

With world travel becoming more accessible to the general public, pharmacists and other health care professionals are seeing an increasing demand for travel health advice. This one-day conference has been designed to discuss the skills and training front-line professionals need to provide up-to-date travel advice to the public.

During the morning session, we will hear from Professor Leo Visser on the routes of vaccination; Professor Patricia Schlagenhauf will give a malaria update including chempoprophylaxis and Dr Ron Behrens, Consultant in Travel Medicine, will address traveller's diahorrea.

The second half of the programme will begin with interactive sessions which will allow delegates to update their knowledge of travel health medicine, inform them of the expectations of the care quality commission when setting up a private travel clinic and the latest and most appropriate resources for the travel health consultation, ending with a session on documentation, training and resources for a travel service.

The day will finish with the personal journey of Mhairi Speirs, an independent pharmacist manager, on the training she undertook to develop her award-winning community travel clinic.

EFGCP Interactive Investigator Training for Inspections

This one-day course is aimed at clinical trial centre staff  such as investigators, co-investigators, study nurses and coordinators and anyone who is involved in the conduct of clinical trials of any phase and design, sponsored by commercial or academic institutions. Inspections are no longer linked to a submission by a sponsor to Health Authorities to obtain a marketing authorization but in the today’s inspection landscape inspections can occur at any time with and without a particular event triggering these. Especially in Europe, Health Authorities conduct inspections as part of their routine oversight activity. For clinical trial centre staff it is, therefore, important to understand what is required during an inspection, how to prepare for and follow-up on an inspection. It is also important to understand and apply new trends such as the concept of a risk based approach that is becoming the reference for inspectors.

This is the first seminar and although being held in London it will address not only UK specificities but also general and EU themes.

EFGCP Workshop on Options and Challenges for Ethical Assessment in the Clinical Trial Regulation Proposal

In July 2012, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a Regulation on Clinical Trials to resolve a
number of problems identified with the current legislation. In the legislative process this proposal is now subject to
discussions by the European Parliament and the Council representing the 27 Member States and in parallel by all
stakeholders affected by it.

One of the key changes proposed concerns the assessment and decision system for clinical trial applications.
The Commission defines the objectives to be achieved, which will have implications on the national competent
authorities and the review by ethics committees. The workshop is meant to provide a platform for a constructive
discussion on the way ethics committees could act and interact in the future.
