Workshop 2 – Case studies in antibiotic prescribing: challenges facing hospital pharmacists

1. Current Status, Position

Dr Laing is a consultant physician in Infectious Diseases and honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Aberdeen. He has extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience and is responsible for the co-ordination of Infectious Diseases teaching to Aberdeen medical students. He is the clinical lead for the Aberdeen Regional Infectious Diseases Unit, Regional Specialty Advisor for Infectious Diseases training, Postgraduate Tutor, MD examiner and supervisor for MSc Pharmacy students studying at Robert Gordon’s University.

2. Education

He graduated MBChB from the University of Edinburgh in 1986 and trained in Infectious Disease and General Medicine in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. In 1999 he was awarded the degree of MD for his thesis entitled “Opportunistic infections in Edinburgh AIDS patients”.

3. Research Area

His research interests include antimicrobial prescribing in hospitals and he has been involved in clinical studies on a number of new antibacterial and antiviral agents.
