Seminar 6 – Specific issues for aging patients – from clinical trials to pharmacotherapy

1. Current status, position

Dr. Huang is a senior attending Geriatrician at the McGill University Health centre, Montreal, Canada. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill University. Also he has been the service chief of the Royal Victoria Hospital 8-Medical acute inpatient geriatric service, and program director for the McGill Postgraduate residency training program in Geriatric Medicine.

2. Education

He is a graduate of McGill Medical school (MDCM ’84) and a certified specialist in Geriatric Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Physicians and the American Geriatrics Society. Also he was Director of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).

3. Research area

Aside from an active clinical geriatrics, teaching and administrative portfolio Dr. Huang has deep interests in clinical informatics. He is a founding member of the McGill Clinical Health and Informatics Research Group. His research interests and expertise are in the areas of medication management in the elderly and patient safety. One of the showcase projects is MOXXI (Medical Office of the XXIst century), which continues to explore the use of an electronic prescribing solution to improve the health of patients. A second example is RightRx: a cluster-randomized trial studying the effect of medication reconciliation at discharge from hospital on the adverse event, return to ED and re-admission rates at 30-days post-discharge.
