In light of the publication of the Communication from the European Commission to the European Parliament, the Council and the European Economic and Social Committee on a European Union strategic approach to pharmaceuticals inthe environment, EAHP has issued an opinion.

EAHP’s opinion outlines the concerns of the hospital pharmacy profession about the negative effects that pharmaceuticals in the environment have on agriculture, aquaculture, livestock and, ultimately, humans and patients, especially since some drugs are not metabolised and degraded into inactive substances by patients or animals treated with these drugs. To tackle the issue, the Association is calling on the European Commission to implement the measures that have been proposed to better address pharmaceutical contamination in a timely and transparent manner. In addition, interdisciplinary education, infection prevention and training programmes for healthcare professionals should be developed and implemented.
