The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) is seeking members to join its Special Interest Group (SIG) on Interoperability in Automation. This initiative aims to address a critical barrier to adoption of automation equipment by  European hospital pharmacies—interoperability between automation technologies from different vendors. The SIG is set to begin its work in the last quarter of 2024.

Despite the significant proven benefits of automation in improving pharmacy operations and patient safety, only fewer than 30% of European hospital pharmacies are fully or partially automated. A major challenge in the wider adoption of these technologies is the lack of seamless communication and integration between automation systems, which leads to inefficiencies, higher costs, and complexity in implementation.

The SIG on Interoperability in Automation has been established to tackle this issue. Inspired by the success of standards like DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine), the SIG will aim to develop a communication protocol to facilitate integration between the various automation equipment in hospital pharmacies, building on existing protocols such as HL7, IHE and FHIR. This collaborative effort will bring together hospital pharmacists and automation vendors to simplify and standardize these processes, ultimately driving higher adoption of automation in hospitals.

Call for the Expression of Interest

Scope of activities

EAHP’s SIG on pharmacy automation interoperability will be responsible for developing a vendor-neutral standard communication protocol enabling seamless workflow while delivering selected use cases with different equipment from multiple vendors.

The SIG on pharmacy automation interoperability will focus on:

  • Developing a standardized communication protocol for the seamless integration of automation technologies from multiple vendors.
  • Gathering insights and feedback from hospital pharmacists and vendors to identify key challenges in automation interoperability.
  • Creating guidelines and best practices for hospital pharmacies to adopt and integrate automation systems more effectively.
  • Building a self-assessment tool to help hospitals evaluate their automation needs and compatibility with various systems.
  • Collaborating with vendors to ensure that the developed standards are practical and adaptable to different technologies.

Selection Criteria

EAHP Forum

All the EAHP team is working on providing a Forum that can help connect all the members in Conversations and Groups to talk about important matters for the European Hospital Pharmacist.

The Forum will be accessible for all the EAHP members, you don’t have to create a new account to browse and participate.

Conversations and groups

The Conversations will be moderated by our team to provide documents and relevant topics for the community.

The Groups will connect all members that share a category. Members who work on the same assocation, on the same hospital, that have the same role, etc.

Stay tuned for the realase of the forum. Soon on EAHP.
