Abstract
In the context of limited healthcare resources and workforce shortages, hospital pharmacists play a pivotal role in optimizing medication use across various healthcare settings. This seminar will explore the multifaceted role of the multi-purpose pharmacist, particularly in small hospitals and rural areas, where sometimes only one pharmacist is present. We will also discuss strategies to ensure safe medication management in off-site facilities where challenges abound.
Attendees will learn about effective communication techniques with healthcare teams, the importance of a robust medication –use circuit, and the role of telepharmacy in extending pharmacy services. We will discuss examples displaying how generalist pharmacists have successfully navigated resource constraints while improving medication therapy management and patient outcomes.
Additionally, we will talk about the career landscape for generalist pharmacists compared to specialized clinical roles. While specialized positions offer in-depth clinical focus and can be considered more attractive for newer generations, generalist pharmacists possess the versatility to adapt to diverse environments, which can be especially rewarding in underserved areas. Participants will explore the challenges of generalist practice, such as managing a broad range of conditions with limited support, and how these challenges can also present unique career opportunities for growth and leadership.
Interactive discussions will allow attendees to share their experiences, identify barriers, and brainstorm solutions tailored to their specific settings. Participants will be equipped with practical tools to enhance their roles, ensuring optimal medication use and patient safety, while recognizing the valuable contributions of generalist pharmacists in today’s healthcare landscape.

Learning objectives
After the session, the participant should be able to:
– Identify strategies for optimal medication use in resource-limited settings, including off-site facilities and rural hospitals.
– Evaluate the unique challenges and career opportunities for generalist pharmacists compared to specialized clinical roles.
– Develop actionable solutions for overcoming workforce shortages and resource constraints in pharmacy practice, fostering innovative approaches to ensure safe and effective medication management in their institutions.

Educational need addressed
This seminar aims to equip hospital pharmacists with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive in their generalist roles, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and enhanced healthcare delivery.
