Current position
Dr. Lien Mertens
is currently a PhD-researcher at KU Leuven in Belgium. She investigates the process of shared decision making through the eyes of patients with socially vulnerable backgrounds to better tailor the decision-making process to their needs. Dr. Mertens is also a part-time general practitioner at a multidisciplinary primary care center that is accommodated for patients with socially vulnerable backgrounds.

Education
Lien studied Medicine at the University of Leuven and became licensed physician in 2016. In 2022 she started a PhD in Public Health and Primary Care at the university of Leuven for her work on shared decision making.

Research area
Dr. Lien Mertens’ research focuses on shared decision making with socially vulnerable patients and aims to explore how social inclusion of patient participation in the medical decision-making process may be improved.
