Keynote 1 – Patient partnership in healthcare, a necessary transition?

1. Current Status, Position

Prof. Vanier (BPharm, MSc (pharm)) is full clinical professor at the Faculty of pharmacy, President of the Interfaculy Operational Committee for teaching of interprofessional collaboration and patient partnership. She is clinical pharmacist in the Family Medicine Teaching Clinic of the Hospital Cité de la Santé de Laval.

2. Education

Prof. Vanier graduated as pharmacist in 1989 and completed a Master degree in clinical pharmacology (analgesia) in 1991, both at Université Laval (Quebec city, Canada). She also completed in 1998-99 different continuing professional development trainings involving:

1) adherence to treatment and anticoagulation at Guy’s and St-Thomas Hospitals and the School of Pharmacy, University of London, UK;

2) anticoagulation and Evidence Based Medicine at University of Texas Health Science Center and South Texas Veterans Healthcare System, Audie L. Murphy Hospital, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

Between 1991 and 1998, she worked as a hospital pharmacist in Quebec city on different wards (cardiology, psychiatry, surgery, burn unit) and served as a continuing education agent for the Quebec’s College of Pharmacists. Since 1999, Professor Vanier holds a joint clinical and academic appointment at the Faculty of pharmacy of Université de Montréal and Family Medicine Teaching Clinic of Cité de la Santé de Laval Hospital. She is also clinician of the Sanofi Aventis endowment chair in ambulatory pharmaceutical care of these two organizations. She is providing pharmaceutical care at the clinic and also contributes to the training of pharmacy, medicine and nursing students. Besides her academic duties on campus, involving teaching of pharmacotherapy and collaborative practice to pharmacy students, she directed the development of an interfaculty curriculum of interprofessional courses on collaborative practice in partnership with patients and their caregivers for health sciences and psycho-social sciences students. This curriculum has been co-constructed with patients and presents the unique characteristic of interprofessional workshops co-facilited by patients and health professionals. Since March 2010, Professor Vanier is Chair of the Interfaculty Operational Committee developing and coordinating these courses. She is also sitting on the Advisory Professional Inspection Committee of the Quebec’s College of pharmacy.

3. Research Area

Prof. Vanier’s clinical areas of expertise are analgesia, anticoagulation and primary care. She has collaborated to different research projects related to her expertise. Her research work is now mainly focused on collaborative practice, pharmaceutical care, interprofessional education and patients’ engagement in health professionals’ education.
