1. Current Status, Position

Joan Peppard is currently Chief Pharmacist and head of department in the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore Co Offaly. 

With a keen interest in the growth and development of hospital pharmacy and a strong commitment to excellence in patient care, Ms Peppard served in a leadership capacity on a number of key committees in Ireland at local, regional and national level including Presidency of the Hospital Pharmacists Association Ireland from 2004 – 2006 and 2011 – 2012. As President of the EAHP since 2015 she is involved in numerous issues focused on improvement in patient care through implementation of the European Statements of Hospital Pharmacy, development of a common training framework for recognition of hospital pharmacy as a specialisation, and annual surveys of European Hospital Pharmacy practice in conjunction with hospital pharmacy self assessment to measure progress in these areas.

2. Education

Joan studied pharmacy at University College Dublin and became a licensed pharmacist in 1980. In 1996 she undertook a Diploma in Business Studies and obtained a BA in Healthcare Management in 2000. Joan undertook a Leadership course for Health Systems Managers with the Office of Health Management/ University of Limerick and obtained an MA (Ethics) from Dublin City University, Mater Dei Institute of Education in 2012.

Joan has worked in hospital pharmacy in Ireland since 1984. and her current role is Chief Pharmacist in Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, Co Offaly. She was President of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists 2015 – 2018 and President of the Hospital Pharmacists Association Ireland from 2004 – 2006 and 2011 – 2012.

3. Research Area

Joan is currently Chair of the EAHP Special Interest Group on Hazardous Medicinal Products.  Her previous research interests included Clinical Ethic Committees, Research Ethics Committees and Medicine Shortages.
