Seminar Operational 1: The selecetion and implementation of technology in the hospital pharmacy processes

1. Current Status, Position

Carla Masini is currently the head of the pharmacy laboratory for oncologic therapy at IRST (Scientific Institute of Romagna for Research and Treatment of Cancer, www.irst.emr.it). She has been involved in setting-up and managing this centralized pharmacy that served in 2012 nearly 2700 patients in three hospitals with an annual production of more than 44000 chemos and 64000 ancillary preparations. Since 2001 she has been also in charge of implementing the Regional Electronic Medical Records concerning the Oncology section (Log80). In 2011 Carla conceived and managed the innovative project  of automatizing the daily production of chemotherapies (APOTECAchemo). So far, she has gained a 5-year experience in retail pharmacy, a 12 year in hospital pharmacy and an 11-year experience in oncology pharmacy.

• Qualification as Pharmacist, University of Bologna
• Advanced course in Oncology Pharmacy
• Advanced courses on GCP and national legislation on Clinical Research.
• Master’s II level Degree in “Pharmacy and Pharmacology cancer”, University of Milan
• Master’s II level Degree in “Department Manager”, University of Camerino

3. Research Area

Carla Masini focuses her work on the following areas of research:

• Clinical advantage of automation
• Benchmark and best practice in the automatised compounding of oncology therapies
• Quality and safety in oncology compounding
