2. Education
Dr Grimes is a practicing clinical pharmacist, she splits her time between Trinity College Dublin and Tallaght Hospital. In 1998, she graduated from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) with BSc (Pharm) and commenced a career in hospital pharmacy following becoming a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland in 1999. She completed the TCD Masters in Hospital Pharmacy in 2002, a work based programme designed to develop pharmacists competent to work in any aspect of hospital pharmacy. Between 2003 and 2005 she worked in the community pharmacy setting and became involved in teaching and learning through part-time work in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr Grimes returned to hospital practice in 2005 and commenced a programme of doctoral research investigating vulnerabilities in the medication use process at care transitions. She completed her PhD in 2009. She was appointed as Associate Professor in the Practice of Pharmacy in TCD in 2011, a half-time position. Her current work combines research, teaching & learning, and clinical practice.
3. Research Area
Her research focuses on medication safety at care transitions and the development of the role of the clinical pharmacist. She is interested in investigating the benefits of different models of medication management, particularly optimizing pharmacy involvement in collaborative multi-professional teams; developing methods to identify and prioritise patients most vulnerable to medication related harm and ensuring efficiency in medication related activities. She contributes to a number of national committees and steering groups, bringing her expertise in pharmacy practice and medication safety. Her current work combines research, teaching & learning, and clinical practice.
