1. Current Status, Position

Elfi De Weerdt is a PhD-researcher on drug shortages, focus on Belgium and Europe.

2. Education

Graduated cum laude in 2013 in Biomedical Sciences at the KU Leuven, started in February 2014 as a PhD – researcher at the departement of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences – unit Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy.

3. Research Area

During the last 3 years, she has been focusing on drug shortages. How to prevent them and how to minimize patients’ impact. The main focus of the PhD-project lies on Belgium, however, the problem of drug shortages is also investigated at European level.

Our aim is to investigate the causes of medicine and medical device shortages in the hospital setting,  while also gathering effective solutions and best practices implemented at local, regional, and national levels.
