Current position
Elaine Thomson is currently an Outreach Pharmacist at NHS Lothian, currently working on the PHOENIX for Severe and Multiple Disadvantage study within Edinburgh – an open, multicenter, parallel group, prospective RCT with parallel economic analysis and process evaluation. She leads the team of pharmacists working on this trial within Lothian.
Education
Elaine studied pharmacy at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and became a qualified pharmacist in 2006. She gained a MSc in Clinical Pharmacy from Strathclyde University in 2012 and an Independent Prescribing Qualification from Robert Gordon University in 2016. She recently (2025) gained a Masters module qualification from Glasgow Caledonian University in Advanced Clinical Assessment and Decision Making. Elaine has worked as an Outreach Pharmacist within Inclusion Health services in Edinburgh since 2019.
Research area
Elaine’s research focuses on Pharmacist Homeless Outreach Engagement Non-Medical Independent Prescribing (PHOENIx) and this is the first clinical trial she has been involved in running. The study aims to reduce drug deaths and improve quality of life through engagement with health and social care services and meaningful activity.
