The EAHP Board, elected for three-year terms, oversees the association’s activities. Comprising directors responsible for core functions, it meets regularly to implement strategic goals. Supported by EAHP staff, the Board controls finances, coordinates congress organization, and ensures compliance with statutes and codes of conduct.
1. Current Status, Position
Howard Bergendahl is President of the Bergendahl Institute, LLC, a professional consulting firm dedicated to facilitating the transfer of successful performance improvement techniques from the nuclear power industry to other industries.
2. Education
Howard’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry, a Master of Science degree in Health Physics and a Juris Doctorate degree. He is also a licensed attorney, he received a Senior Reactor Operator license from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission and he is a Registered Patent Attorney.
Howard’s career began in the nuclear power industry where he started as a Radiation Health and Safety Engineer and went on to spend 20 years operating and managing nuclear facilities. He advanced to the position of Vice President – Nuclear where he was the corporate officer with overall responsibility for the safe operation of a large commercial nuclear facility with a 800 person staff. In 2003 he co-founded the Bergendahl Institute and for the last 10 years Howard has led the Institute in its mission to improve patient safety by assisting healthcare organizations to incorporate the nuclear industry lessons learned in areas of human error management and safety culture.
3. Research Area
The Bergendahl institute specialises in the area of safety culture and provides education programs, culture surveys, incident reporting programs, root cause analysis and management mentoring. Howard’s recent publications have focused on utilizing low threshold reporting programs to strengthen safety culture and continuously improve organizational performance. As a trusted and respected consultant, Howard is a routinely asked to speak at conferences, advise corporate boards and provide counsel to senior executives.
