EAHP General Assembly 2025 – A Board Member re-elected, two new EAHP members, and two position papers adopted

From 5 to 7 June, the member countries of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) gathered in Thessaloniki, Greece, for the 55th General Assembly.

The two-days meeting was chaired by EAHP President, Dr Nenad Miljković. Throughout the Assembly, delegates received updates on EAHP’s educational initiatives, including certification courses and e-learning programmes. They also reviewed the Association’s ongoing projects and discussed key policy developments in the healthcare sector. A significant portion of the discussions focused on the challenges currently faced by the hospital pharmacy profession, such as workforce shortages and the evolving role of hospital pharmacists in light of scientific, technological, and digital advancements.

Particular attention was given to the growing issue of medicines and medical devices shortages. Delegates were updated on the EAHP BOOST, the second edition of which -taking place in Prague, Czech Republic, on 14-15 November 2025- will focus on this topic. The EAHP President warmly encouraged delegates to promote the ongoing EAHP survey on medicines and medical devices shortages in hospital setting across Europe. The survey is available in several languages and remains open until 15 July.

The General Assembly also saw the re-election of Tjalling van der Schors for a third term as Director of Professional Development, reaffirming the current composition of the EAHP Board of Directors.

In addition, the Assembly approved the entry of two new member associations: the Armenian Society of Clinical Pharmacy, which extends EAHP’s membership to 37 countries, and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), which joins the Guild of Healthcare Pharmacists (GHP) under the Membership-UK Collective.

Two new position papers were adopted during the General Assembly, one on Patient Safety and the other on Access to Medicines. The position paper on Patient Safety sets out a series of cross-sectoral recommendations designed to enhance safety in healthcare. It underscores the importance of personalised, patient-centred care and effective infection control; highlights the urgency of addressing shortages of both healthcare professionals and medical products; and calls for the monitoring of individual and systemic errors to foster safer conditions for both patients and staff.

The position paper on Access to Medicines stresses the need for collaborative approaches across the supply chain to combat shortages and to ensure timely access to treatments. It highlights the crucial role of hospital pharmacists in optimising procurement based on clinical need and evidence, calls for enhanced coordination among Member States in areas such as pricing, reimbursement, and procurement, and advocates for patient interests and rights to be placed at the core of the Critical Medicines Act and of the ongoing revision of the pharmaceutical legislation. It also encourages the effective use of the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Regulation to improve access, with greater input from healthcare professionals.
