Call for Participants

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) is seeking hospital pharmacists to join a new Special Interest Group exploring how medication management is organised across European hospitals and how different models can contribute to safer, more efficient and patient-centred medication use.

Across Europe, hospitals use a wide range of approaches, from highly centralised medication management systems to decentralised ward-based models and, increasingly, hybrid combinations of both. However, comparative evidence on the advantages, limitations and context-dependent suitability of these models remains limited.

The SIG will map current practice, examine the available evidence and evaluate real-world examples across different European healthcare systems. Its ultimate aim is to develop practical recommendations and a decision framework that can support hospitals in determining which medication management approaches are most appropriate for their specific context.

Who we are looking for (Hospital Pharmacist profile)

We are seeking hospital pharmacists with practical experience and/or expertise in the organisation, implementation or optimisation of medication management systems.

Relevant areas of experience may include:

  • centralised, decentralised or hybrid medication management models;
  • unit-dose and patient-specific medication distribution;
  • ward-based medication management and automated dispensing cabinets;
  • digitalisation, automation and interoperability within the medication-use process;
  • medication safety and workflow optimisation;
  • implementation, evaluation or governance of medication management systems.

We particularly welcome applicants from different European countries, healthcare systems and hospital types and sizes. Experience with different organisational and technological approaches is particularly valuable, as diversity of practice will be essential to the work of the SIG.

Analytical & collaborative skills

Participants should be willing and able to:

  • critically analyse medication management processes, their benefits, limitations and risks;
  • contribute practical experience and real-world examples from their own healthcare setting;
  • work collaboratively with colleagues representing different healthcare systems and medication management models;
  • contribute to evidence review, surveys, case studies and the development of practical recommendations;
  • engage constructively in consensus-building.

Commitment & availability

SIG members will be expected to:

  • participate actively throughout the SIG lifecycle;
  • attend a a monthly meeting;
  • contribute to the SIG’s research, documentation and final outputs;
  • work according to collaborative, neutral and non-commercial principles.

The SIG will kick off in October 2026 and is planned to end in Summer 2028. SIG members will be provided with a free registration for an EAHP Congress.

Selection process

Candidates are invited to submit a CV and a motivation letter outlining their relevant experience, motivation for joining the SIG and the perspective they could contribute to the group. Final selection will be confirmed by the SIG Chair/Co-Chairs and EAHP.
