The Finnish Pharmacists’ Association has around 8000 members. Association is divided into 6 sections, 14 regional divisions and 3 committees (e.g. pharmaceutical committee). Section for Wellbeing Services Counties is the expert body for scientific and professional topics in hospital pharmacy. This section has around 600 members, but represents the whole field of health care pharmacy practice, including more than 1200 pharmacists working in various health care units. There are 25 hospital pharmacies in Finland and these employ most hospital pharmacists.
Pharmacy faculties of University of Helsinki and University of Eastern Finland organize specialisation programme in community and hospital pharmacy. This is a 3-4 year programme (40-60 sp), but is not legally defined and is not mandatory when working as a hospital pharmacist in Finland. The programme includes clinical pharmacy, medication safety, research methodology and administration of hospital pharmacy. Around 10 hospital pharmacists enter this programme yearly.
