Draft austerity statement April 2013

Further to previous draft of September 2013, responding to member association concerns about this issue.

The statement is designed to assist EAHP enter the European level debate on this issue. It deals with medicines pricing trends, hospital pharmacy staffing, hospital pharmacist training and development opportunities and threats to investment. It also makes suggestion about how hospital pharmacists can help to meet austerity statements.

The overall tone of the statement is to suggest to policy makers smarter and longer term thinking is required to how to enable sustainable health systems which includes increasing hospital pharmacist roles.

Issues for Board consideration include:

  • Is it appropriate for EAHP to make recommendations to "national governments"?
  • Can we be more robust than "sensible staffing levels" and "reasonable levels of capital investment"?
  • How much do we wish to say on the medicines pricing issue?

Otherwise Board comments on wording, structure, content and references is welcomed, as well as any possible case studies of austerity effects.

Timeline:

Sunday 21st April: discussion of the statement in the Board

Week of 22nd April: further draft of statement to be circulated taking account of comments received

Sunday 28th April: further comments from Board to be received

Wednesday 1 May: draft statement to be issued to members for review and potential amendment/addition

The Groups will connect all members that share a category. Members who work on the same assocation, on the same hospital, that have the same role, etc.
