The EAHP Board, elected for three-year terms, oversees the association’s activities. Comprising directors responsible for core functions, it meets regularly to implement strategic goals. Supported by EAHP staff, the Board controls finances, coordinates congress organization, and ensures compliance with statutes and codes of conduct.

One Health Action Plan
At the end of June, the European Commission published the new One Health Action Plan against AMR. It was requested by the Member States in the Council conclusions of 17 June 2016 and builds on the 2011 action plan. EAHP contributed to the action plan by inputting to the public consultation. The action plan is divided into three pillars focusing on
- Making the EU a best practice region;
- Boosting research, development and innovation; and
- Shaping the global agenda.
The actions listed in the plan largely focus on awareness raising. However, little concrete is mentioned in the plan. Through the publication of the EU Guidelines for the prudent use of antimicrobials in human health the European Commission already complied with one of its goals set in the action plan.
Health Policy Platform
The Health Policy Platform is an online network that has been set up by the European Commission in order to provide a framework for dialogue between the European Commission & health-related interest groups or organisations. The web tool enables interest groups or organisations to start online discussions, to promote meetings or conferences, to share health-related knowledge & best practices, to work on joint statements on health issues and to contribute to & access a library of relevant materials. In addition to the general “network” the European Commission has slowly started to encourage the setting up of different “thematic networks” in order to provide a space for more meaningful discussions on specific topics. EPHA (European Public Health Alliance) has created a thematic network on AMR. Is the thematic network on AMR something that we want to get involved in?
ECDC
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has reviewed the toolkit for the prudent use of antibiotics in hospitals, since the usage still remain very high in this sector. Tajda participated in the review on behalf of EAHP. The toolkit will be released in mid-October. ECDC promised to share information on the content (i.e. the link to the password protected website that contains all the information) with us as soon as possible. Due to our close cooperation in the past, ECDC asked us to spread information about the toolkit among our members.
ECDC meeting to discuss the EAAD 2017
10 years ago, ECDC started to organise the European Antimicrobial Awareness Day (EAAD) in order to raise awareness on AMR. This year’s EAAD will focus on hospitals since figures on the use of antibiotics are not decreasing. This year’s EAAD is on Saturday 18th November. Since the day falls on a weekend, the official celebration will be held in Brussels on 15th November. Invitations will be send out shortly. The meeting will be web streamed and participants can ask questions/ submit comments via twitter. Due to our active engagement in the past years, ECDC asked us to provide them with a short video pledge (see previous pledges HERE). This year’s theme will most likely be #keepantibioticsworking and thus the question that should be answered in the video is “How does EAHP keep antibiotics working?”.
The submission deadline for the video is the 5th of November. In case the board decides that EAHP should do a pledge, we could film Joan during the Statement Ambassadors meeting in October since this would allow us to also place the EAHP banner in the background.
Meeting with the Commission on AMR
During our meeting with ECDC Dominique Monnet – the Head of Disease Programme, Antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections – highlighted that the European Commission is not very aware of the different actions on AMR that are taken by European organisation such as EAHP as well as by hospital pharmacists in general. Consequently, it would be very beneficial for us to set up a meeting with the Commission, preferably after the EAAD, to share our efforts on AMR with them. Would making the Commission more aware of our actions on AMR be something that the board is interested.
EU-JAMRAI
France has started a joint initiative that investigates Antimicrobial resistance and Health Care Associated Infections. The initiative is funded by the 3rd Health Programme and besides France the following other countries participate: Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Sweden and Norway. A Stakeholder forum consisting out of industry, healthcare professionals, patients, and organisations (i.e. OECD, ECDC, etc.) can be consulted and give advise. Information on EU-JAMRAI HERE
