In an introductory editorial Phil Wiffen considers the role of the hospital pharmacist in pain management, quoting statistics from the International Study of Pain that one in five Europeans suffers from pain that has been occurring regularly for three months or longer; one in eleven, suffers from pain daily; and that there are 100 million people affected by chronic pain in the 27 EU Members. An original research article seeks to explore the type and frequency of manipulations of drug dosage forms required to administer smaller doses for children and the drugs involved. More here.

A study from Hungary examines the role of the hospital pharmacist in facilitating online medication safety by conducting behavioural analysis of those patients who choose to purchase medicines over the internet. More here.

Research from Madrid looks at the impact of information leaflets to help patients understand the objectives of triple therapy, to be aware and prevent the possible side effects and to teach patients how to take the medicines. More here.

Short reports consider a range of interesting topics, including: the development and delivery of pharmacy services for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games; the stability of an oral ranitidine suspension (15 mg/ml); a strategy for clinical pharmacy development; and, implications of the EU Directive on prevention from sharp injuries in the hospital and healthcare sector on procurement decisions.
