EMA’s CHMP recommends suspending the marketing authorisation for Oxbryta

EMA’s human medicines committee (CHMP) recommends suspending the marketing authorisation for the sickle cell disease medicine Oxbryta (voxelotor) due to emerging safety concerns. Recent data from registry-based studies show a higher incidence of vaso-occlusive crises in patients using Oxbryta. This comes as EMA was already reviewing the drug following reports of increased deaths in clinical trials. The manufacturer has decided to withdraw the drug and halt clinical trials. The EMA advises doctors to stop prescribing Oxbryta and explore alternative treatments while the review continues. A final decision is pending.

The update of the Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2) is now applicable

As of the 18 October 2024, the NIS2 Directive has become applicable in all member states updating and harmonising the minimum level of cybersecurity required throughout Europe for important and critical entities including for the health sector such as healthcare providers. To support stakeholders in their implementation of the new rules and requirements, the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) has published an information campaign with various infographics and videos on key aspects of the legislation such as risk management measures or incident reporting obligations.

Two notable reflection papers that EMA released this month are:

  • The new EMA Network Strategy 2028 aims to address major healthcare challenges such as accessibility, the use of artificial intelligence, antimicrobial resistance, supply chain issues, and alignment with the forthcoming update of the EU Pharmaceutical Legislation. More information is available here
  • The reflection paper on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the medicinal product lifecycle highlight the significant potential of AI and machine learning (ML) to enhance various stages of medicinal products, from development to pharmacovigilance, while emphasising the need to avoid biases and adhere to legal and ethical standards. More information is available here.
