EJHP announces appointment of new Editor in Chief

Phil Wiffen has been appointed the new Editor in Chief of the European Journal of Hospital Pharmacy: Science and Practice (EJHP).
The title is the official journal of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP), and has been published on behalf of the Association by BMJ Group since January this year alongside more than 40 of the Group’s other specialist titles.

Phil Wiffen began his career in hospital pharmacy at King’s College Hospital London, after which he worked in Indonesia for 4 years before returning to the UK.

Most of his hospital pharmacy career was spent in Oxford where he was responsible for developing clinical pharmacy services and rose to become Chief Pharmacist in a teaching hospital.

This was followed by posts at the regional advisor level and at the UK Government's Department of Health where he led on antimicrobial resistance issues. These jobs developed in parallel with a key interest in clinical pharmacy for pain services.

Phil was invited to establish the Cochrane Pain, Palliative and Supportive Care Group, one of the 52 review groups of the Cochrane Collaboration.

In recent years he has worked as Director of Operations and Training for the UK Cochrane Centre responsible for the training of all authors preparing Cochrane reviews who are based in the UK, Ireland, and the Middle East.

In May 2012 he set up his own training company called Oxford Systematic Review Services.
Phil has served on the WHO essential medicines committee, taught systematic review methods and clinical pharmacy for several months in China and has published over 150 academic papers and 2 pharmacy textbooks.

He is visiting Professor in the Department Pharmacy and Pharmacology at Bath University as well as at three Chinese Universities.

He is passionate about evidence based medicine, clinical pharmacy and encouraging pharmacists to undertake and publish research.

Chief Operating Officer, Jennie De Greef said:
“EAHP is pleased to have Phil Wiffen join the team and we are confident that his leadership will continue to improve the impact of the journal on hospital pharmacy in Europe.”

EAHP President, Dr. Roberto Frontini said:
“We are thrilled to have Phil joining us as the new EJHP Editor in Chief. He brings with him a wealth of experience in both hospital practice and pharmaceutical publishing that I have no doubt will impress itself in the coming editions of the Journal. I am confident that, in combination with the publishing team at BMJ Group, a winning partnership will soon be established to take our Journal to new heights in both quality and audience reach.”
“I also want to extend my sincerest gratitude to departing Editor Prof Arnold Vulto. Without his dedicated stewardship of the Journal since 2004 it would not have been possible to embark on this next exciting stage of development. Prof Vulto can look back with enormous pride on what he has achieved in producing a Journal of Hospital Practice so respected and widely read as the EJHP.”
