Abstract:

Pharmacy students are the pharmacists working in hospitals in the future. However many students at universities across Europe do not imagine themselves becoming hospital pharmacists when they embark on their career. Reasons for this include the restriction and competition for training places, lack of knowledge regarding the roles of a hospital pharmacist and a higher enthusiasm for other areas of practice. This is the first session at the EAHP congress which will identify possible barriers that students face when considering if hospital pharmacy is right for them and also to hear from experienced hospital pharmacists to share their experiences, especially starting their careers. EAHP wants to welcomes students, especially if it is their first EAHP congress and this session will hopefully open the door to a future career in hospital pharmacy.

Teaching goals:

  • Identify the job specification of a hospital pharmacist in some european countries
  • Discuss the career pathway within hospital pharmacy
  • Identify aspects of hospital pharmacy that is attractive to the new generation of students and discuss future developments.

Learning Objectives:

After the session the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the role of the hospital pharmacist in his/her country and be aware of differences between countries.
  • Identify the qualities needed from the hospital pharmacist and how to be able to apply for jobs in the field
  • List the areas in which a hospital pharmacist may practice.
