Abstract

Pharmacists play an increasingly important role as partners in the efficient use of the healthcare resources. Therefore a question arises whether a current model of pharmacy education and training in Europe is tailored to the needs. The PHARMINE consortium was created in2008 to survey the present state of pharmacy education and training in European Union member states and to create new recommendations for new competence curricula for pharmacy education and training in the EU. During the seminar we will focus on the analysis  of PHARMINE project as well as on its recommendations for core education and training. The seminar will also describe current strategic pharmacy workforce development policy and implementation from national, regional and global perspectives. It will be shown how competency-based development of pharmacy practitioners can be related to enhanced performance of pharmaceutical health delivery and improvement in public health. Several country case studies of educational and training trends will be used to demonstrate how this is affecting the clinical pharmacy and hospital pharmacy workforce. In addition suggestions how to best customize pharmaceutical study to the needs will be also a part of the discussion.

Teaching Goals:

  • to familiarize the audience with current issue of pharmacy education and training
  • to present results of PHARMINE project
  • to give a practical advice how the goal of better education could be achieved ( implementation of OSCEs for assessment of scientific and formulation skills, web-enhanced educational project for the Practice of Pharmaceutical Care etc.)
Learning Objectives:

Participants:
  • should become familiar with activities of PHARMINE
  • should be able to describe current trends in competency-based pharmacy education
  • should be able to link healthcare education policy at global level with national interest
  • should be able to identify the need and the way for improving the education and training
