Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat. Everybody can read on this problem. But if we ask ourselves as experts, we have to acknowledge that we have perhaps not performed a perfect job ourselves. The implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship as one possible measure is still not taking place across European countries. Antibiotic consumption analysis struggles in getting the data from ambulatory and hospital care in order to have a broad overview. Resistance rates are rising, we only seem to control the spread of resistant bacteria in few infections. Risk factors like use of antibiotics in non-infection situations (men and animal) have not significantly changed in the last years.
The speakers will give an overview on the different problems driving antibiotic resistance and will then analyse the different measures on local as well as on a global basis to conquer antibiotic resistance.
Learning objectives
After the session, participants should be able to:
• list the impact of antimicrobial resistance on European health systems;
• list the impact of antimicrobial resistance on patient outcome;
• explain different measures on the global and the local level to fight antimicrobial resistance;
• discuss the outcome of the different measures to fight antimicrobial resistance.
Educational need addressed
Antimicrobial resistance is a major problem in hospitals. Hospital pharmacists are active members of Antimicrobial Stewardship Teams and often responsible for Antimicrobial Consumption Surveillance. Because of that hospital pharmacists have a need for information on this topic.
Questions on educational need after EAHP congresses state that EAHP members want to get presentations on the topic of antimicrobial resistance.
Keywords: antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, consumption surveillance, Drug Use Evaluation (DUE).
