Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC)
Approximately 6-7% of all hospital admissions are medication related. Reducing this percentage requires innovative solutions. In Leiden, hospital pharmacists, in collaboration with medical specialists and European partners, have conducted groundbreaking research on the use of a DNA medication card. The results are impressive: the risk of severe side effects in patients taking multiple medications was reduced by 30%.
This video explains how the DNA medication card works and how it improves care, particularly for vulnerable patients, such as those with heart conditions. It highlights not only a technological breakthrough but also an excellent example of collaboration between hospital pharmacists and medical specialists.
Erasmus Medical Center
To address the challenges patients face due to medicine shortages, strong political action is urgently needed. Pharmacists can no longer tackle this issue alone. Hospital pharmacists in The Netherlands are also calling for a constructive parliamentary debate this morning to establish a structural approach to this pressing problem, which affects the entire Dutch society.
The NVZA advocates for:
- Adjustments to procurement policies to reduce dependence on a few suppliers
- Support for in-house compounding and the distribution of compounded medications among hospital pharmacists
- Maintenance of strategic reserves of raw materials for essential medicines
- Reduction of administrative burdens related to the import of medicines
The health of patients must remain the top priority. Only a broadly supported, structural solution can sustainably resolve this urgent situation.
This video features hospital pharmacists sharing how they work with medical specialists to find creative solutions to medicine shortages every day.
