Abstract
With the growing challenge of global antibiotic resistance, strategies to promote the responsible use of antibiotics are essential. One such approach is providing parenteral antibiotic therapy outside the hospital, known as outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT). OPAT facilitates using narrow-spectrum antibiotics administered through devices such as elastomeric or electronic infusion pumps. However, implementing these novel treatment methods presents new challenges for hospital pharmacy compounding units.
How can the preparation of parenteral antimicrobials for home administration be effectively initiated? What preparation, shelf-life, quality management and other challenges do units face when tasked with preparing antimicrobials for home use? What level of collaboration is needed between the treating unit and the preparation unit to ensure successful implementation?
In this workshop, participants will delve into the challenges of establishing OPAT preparation processes and discuss practical solutions. They will also gain valuable insights into the opportunities and advantages of OPAT treatments, illustrated with real-world examples.

Learning objectives
After the session, the participant should be able to:
– Understand what outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy is and how it can be delivered.
– Identify strategies for compounding units in hospital pharmacies to set up preparation of outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy.

Educational need addressed
To implement new settings to treat a patient may have impact on production and compounding in hospital pharmacies. This workshop increases knowledge of the participants regarding on the practise of preparation of medicines for outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy.
