Abstract
Shortages of medical devices (MDs) have emerged as a major challenge for European healthcare systems, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. These shortages disrupt access to care and jeopardize treatment delivery when essential devices—such as pumps, catheters, or needles—are unavailable. Such situations place additional strain on healthcare facilities and professionals, who must urgently identify viable alternatives.
This session will begin with an in-depth contextual analysis, drawing on a European survey commissioned by the European Commission and conducted by the Austrian Competent Authority (GOEG). Developed in collaboration with the EAHP and Europharmat, this analysis will shed light on the structural and regulatory causes of supply chain tensions while highlighting their wide-ranging impact on European healthcare systems.
In the second part of the session, we will explore local initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges. The French approach will be showcased, including a collaborative platform project spearheaded by the DGOS and ANSM, set to launch in 2026. This innovative tool will enable stakeholders to report MD shortages, share real-time information, and collectively propose equivalent alternatives.
By combining European and national perspectives, this session aims to identify practical solutions to anticipate and manage MD shortages, while promoting enhanced coordination among European countries.
