1. Current Status, Position

Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Professor in Hospital Pharmacy/Clinical Pharmacy at the University Medical Center Groningen and the department of Pharmacy of the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences, University Groningen.

2. Education

He started his study at the University of Groningen in 1977. In 1984 he took his Master’s degree, with specialization in pharmacology and pharmacotherapy and he past his pharmacist examination in 1986. He started his active career at the Department of Pharmacy of the Academisch Ziekenhuis Groningen (AZG) where he followed a three-year programme to become hospital pharmacist from 1987 till 1990. During this period he was also responsible for the radiopharmacy within the Department of Nuclear Medicine.

At the beginning of 1990 he was registered as a full member of the Dutch Society of Hospital Pharmacists (NVZA) and since then he has worked in several areas of attention within the hospital pharmacy at the AZG, now known as the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

In 2001 he became head of the Department of Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy in the same hospital, a position he still maintains.

On June 8, 2005 he got his PhD-degree on his thesis “Strategies for specific drug targeting to tumor cells; Radiolabelled monoclonal antibodies from clone to clinic”.

In July 2011 he is appointed Professor in Hospital Pharmacy/Clinical Pharmacy at the University Medical Center Groningen. He will combine this with his position as head of the department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology of the UMCG and a position in the department of Pharmacy of the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences.

3. Research Area

His professional activities reach further than the hospital and he has been and still is very active in several national and regional boards, committees and working groups.

He is also registered as a Clinical Pharmacologist.

His scientific interests include translational research of biopharmaceuticals (monoclonal antibodies and peptides), targeted and personalized medicine and investigating the added value of pharmacotherapeutic and pharmaceutical innovations.

He (co)-authored about 70 peer-reviewed publications. He is currently supervising 15 PhD projects.

Conflict of interest: He is in the Advisory board (on a case by case basis) for Amgen, BMS and MSD. Research grant from Roche and Genetech. Previous research grant recipient from Pfizer.
