1. Current Status, Position

Uwe Frank, MD, PHD, is Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School, Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany, and Director of Studies (DoS) at the Institute of Environmental Medicine and Hospital Epidemiology, Freiburg, Germany. He was Work Package leader in the European IPSE/HELICS project (Improving Patient Safety in Europe/ Hospital in Europe Link for Infection Control through Surveillance), coordinator of the BURDEN project (Burden of Resistance and Disease in European Nations), and is currently coordinator of the IMPLEMENT project (Implementing Strategic Bundles for Infection Prevention and Management), all of them financed by the EU Commission Directorate- General for Health and Consumer Protection (DGSANCO). Future actions aim at the development of best strategies for quality improvement and patient safety in European healthcare systems.

2. Education

  • 2010: Board Certification in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology
  • 2003: Infectious Disease Diploma (Continuing Medical Education in Internal Medicine)
  • 1998: Ph.D.Post doctoral lecturing qualification in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg, Germany. Post Doctoral Thesis: Nosocomial infections in HIV patients: Epidemiology, risk factors and prolongation of hospital stay
  • 1995: Board Certification in Clinical Microbiology and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases
  • 1988: Doctorates in Medicine, Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg, Germany. Doctoral Thesis: Tissue concentrations of cephalosporin-antibiotics: Cefotetan, cefmenoxime, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone
  • 1986: Medical License; Albert -Ludwigs- University Medical School, Freiburg, Germany

3. Research Area

Prof. Dr. Uwe Frank's area of research interests is the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance, as well as the prevention and the control of healthcare – associated infections.
