Journal Highlights: Role of HPs in patient education

A special article published this week on the online European Journal of Hospital Pharmacy looks at the role of the hospital pharmacist in patient education.

Renzo Marcolongo and Anne-Marie Anélook at the challenges faced by many chronic disease patients in relation to self-managing their disease and their treatment after hospital discharge and examine how the hospital pharmacist can teach patients the appropriate management and use of prescribed medications.

The authors examine the particular education requirements for hospital pharmacists to perform such roles effectively and also the remaining institutional barriers for pharmacists taking up positions in Therapeutic Patient Education (TPE).
