Abstract

A senior hospital executive is thinking about how to deliver better coordinated care within her hospital, specifically around the use of medicines. What could hospital pharmacists do to support improvements in healthcare delivery specifically supporting their patients get the best out of their medicines? How far has hospital pharmacy risen to the challenges of increased demand and economic challenges? She falls asleep thinking about this while watching Charles Dickens’ , ‘A Christmas Carol’ on TV……………
That night the executive is visited by 3 spirits: the ghost of hospital pharmacy past, the ghost of hospital pharmacy present and the ghost of hospital pharmacy future. They show her the effects (positive and negative) of approaches towards medicines on the life and experience of Pat, a 69 year old with multiple health problems. Participants will explore the past, present and future of hospital pharmacy practice, considering the best and the worst vision of the future experience on a patient like Pat.

Learning objectives

After the session, the participant should be able to:

  • Value how the history of hospital pharmacy affects its future
  • Recognize the potential opportunities for hospital pharmacy practice
  • Formulate a vision for the future where pharmacists use their knowledge and skills to optimise medicines for individuals as well as populations.

Educational need addressed

Self-awareness of the hospital pharmacist’s role is sometimes lacking. The purpose of this keynote is to highlight this role, to promote and improve the hospital pharmacist’s confidence. This is relevant to all hospital pharmacists.
