Abstract

Innovation is a driver for progress in the health care sector, be it the industrial, educational or the care provider part of it. Without innovation a society is doomed to sink into lethargy. To be innovative we need (educated) people and resources. The crisis in the economies of Europe has cut the flow of money and other resources for innovation to a minimum. So here is the question: how do we innovate in these difficult times where it is most needed? Different actors (such as national governments, EU commission, insurance companies, industry, academia, regulatory bodies) follow different strategies to stimulate innovation. Several of these models will be discussed and attention will be paid to key performance parameters: how do we measure success?

Teaching Goals:

  • to gain insight into the process of innovation,
  • to find solutions in constrained budget situations.

Learning Objectives:

After the presentation the participant should be able:

  • to recognise that innovation doesn’t only need money,

  • to demonstrate that even in times of limitations innovation can flourish.
