Hospital pharmacists currently undertake a diversity of roles in the health care system. There are constant innovative changes to the pharmacists’ role to ensure the safe and effective use of medications. Some areas of specialization of the hospital pharmacist include: Drug information, Clinical specializations such as paediatrics, renal, oncology, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, Manufacturing and extemporaneous production, Providing telepharmacy services to rural and remote areas, Management roles.

However, pharmacist curriculum, pharmacist licensing and graduate continuing education vary from country to country and sometimes between regions/localities within countries.

The preliminary results of the EAHP survey released at beginning of 2010 showed that specialized hospital pharmacy care is provided in 12 EU Member States serving 72% of the total population of the EU. This seminar will overlook at the different situation in Europe and discuss the opportunities and difficulties of specialized Hospital Pharmacy.

Teaching Goals:

the presentation will focus on

  • having an overview of pharmacist curriculum in Europe
  • presenting the time to undertake the specialization

Learning objectives:

the delegates should be able to

  • to identify different opportunities over Europe for specialization
  • to understand needs of specialization
  • to understand advantage/drawbacks for a pharmacist obtaining a specialist qualification
