2022/2023 EAHP Investigation of the Hospital Pharmacy Profession
Brussels, 16 November 2023. Hospital Pharmacists are a key stakeholder within the multidisciplinary teams ensuring timely and equal access of patients to safe medication and high-quality pharmaceutical care. For that reason, in 2014, EAHP adopted the European Statements of Hospital Pharmacy to showcase the work that Hospital Pharmacists do and to present what all European healthcare systems should aim for when delivering hospital pharmacies to improve patient outcomes.
Between the end of October 2022 and early 2023, EAHP conducted the “Investigation of the hospital pharmacy profession in Europe – Assess and advance hospital pharmacy!” which touched on the state-of-the art of our profession and assessed the level of implementation of the European Statements of Hospital Pharmacy within our members countries. The investigation also touched on the hospital pharmacists’ roles during the COVID-19 Pandemic and other practice-specific topics such as vaccines, sustainability and FMD.
The results of this Investigation are key to support the advocacy and policy work done by EAHP both at the European and national level, and to tailor our projects and initiatives to better meet the needs of our member associations. Keele University was commissioned to help with the analysis of the results of this investigation.
We want to thank all our members and individual pharmacists for completing this important Investigation.
EAHP Vice-President, Darija Kuruc Poje, stated “Hospital pharmacists are constantly facing challenges where traditional roles are still very important, but new roles as well. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the insights gained from 2022/2023 EAHP Investigation reflects the profession’s commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. However, the hospital pharmacy profession should gain more visibility in order to preserve and further develop medication expertise.”
